We understand that a new arrival
We understand that a new arrival of Mormonites has taken place—some two hundred men, women and children having lately landed in Geauga county, their holy land, from New York. They have commenced a new settlement, in the township of Thompson, near the line of Ashtabula county, thus extending the holy land farther east than the limits originally fixed. They have full faith in the Mormon doctrine, having as they say, worked a miracle in clearing a passage through the ice at Buffalo, by which they sailed several days sooner than other vessels.
When Monday came the citizens collected
When Monday came the citizens collected and took possession of a ferry belonging to the Mormons across the Blue, but they soon abandoned it and gathered in greater numbers at Wilson's store abut one mile west of it. A party of Mormons, numbering about thirty started from an adjacent settlement to help those on the Blue, but hearing of the assembly of the citizens at the store fled through the cornfields and were pursued by the citizens. Later in the day a party of about thirty arrived from the settlement on the prairie where Pratt had encountered the guards a few nights before, and between them and the citizens a fight occurred, in which Hugh L. Brozeal [Brazeal] and Thos. Linville of the citizens were killed and a Mormon named Barber fatally wounded.

Church members in various branches condemn the vision of three heavenly degrees as devilish because of its universalist rejection of heaven and hell. Brigham Young is among those who initially doubt the vision. Missionaries in the U.S. excommunicate these disbelievers for the next two years. This occurs again in England (1837-39) when new converts learn of the "Three Degrees of Glory" doctrine, later published by LDS church as DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS, section 76.

The "man of sin" is made manifest and Joseph casts him out.

The mob also brings Joseph Smith to Dr. Dennison for castration but the Dennison refuses to perform the operation. Next day, Sidney Rigdon is crazed and wants to kill Joseph Smith with his razor.

Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are tarred and feathered. Rigdon is dragged behind a horse over frozen ground by his heels. His head bumps along the ground and he "loses his mind" for a few days. He asks his wife for a razor to kill Joseph Smith and when she refuses he asks Joseph Smith for a razor to kill his wife. During the attack the mob attempts to force Joseph Smith to drink something and chips his tooth and injures his palate, causing a whistle in his speech which lasts the rest of his life. According to one account, Smith is attacked for seducing Nancy Marinda Johnson, in whose father's house he was residing. Other reports say that "Dr. Dennison" is asked by the mob to castrate Smith but refuses. One mob leader says it was because documents were found indicating that Smith was trying to steal their property. The day after the attack, Smith preaches to a congregation which included several of his attackers.

During the intermission, a difficulty or hardness which had existed between Bishop Partridge and Elder Rigdon was amicably settled, and when we came together in the afternoon all hearts seemed to rejoice, and I received [D&C 82].
