Six members become thousands. The Church is organised in a farmhouse in Fayette, missionaries go out within weeks, and converts gather first to Kirtland in Ohio and then to Jackson County in Missouri. A temple rises in Kirtland and is dedicated, and in the same decade the Saints are driven out of Jackson County by force.

George A. Smith, Reuben Hedlock, and Theodore Turley start for England, and upset their wagon on the bank of the river, before they got out of sight of Commerce. Elders Smith and Turley were so weak they could not get up, and Brother Hedlock had to lift them in again. Soon after, some gentlemen met them and asked who had been robbing the burying ground—so miserable was their appearance through sickness.

In Preston, England, Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde baptize George D. Watt (1812–1881), the first person baptized in England. He was a member of Rev. James Fielding's church. After several members of his congregation are baptized, James becomes a bitter opponent of Mormonism.

Joseph Smith (while living at the Johnson's in Hirum, OH) and Sidney Rigdon are tarred and feathered by Mormons Simons Rider, Warren Waste, Eli Johnson, Edward Johnson, and John Johnson upon rumors of Smith's intimacy with Eli Johnson's sister Nancy Marinda Johnson, age16. The mob also brings Joseph Smith to Dr. Dennison for castration but the Dennison refuses to perform the operation. Next day, Sidney Rigdon is crazed and wants to kill Joseph Smith with his razor.

Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are tarred and feathered. Rigdon is dragged behind a horse over frozen ground by his heels. His head bumps along the ground and he "loses his mind" for a few days. He asks his wife for a razor to kill Joseph Smith and when she refuses he asks Joseph Smith for a razor to kill his wife. During the attack the mob attempts to force Joseph Smith to drink something and chips his tooth and injures his palate, causing a whistle in his speech which lasts the rest of his life. According to one account, Smith is attacked for seducing Nancy Marinda Johnson, in whose father's house he was residing. Other reports say that "Dr. Dennison" is asked by the mob to castrate Smith but refuses. One mob leader says it was because documents were found indicating that Smith was trying to steal their property. The day after the attack, Smith preaches to a congregation which included several of his attackers.

In his blessing, he and Joseph have fulfilled the biblical Joseph's prophecy that a Seer and his Scribe would be ordained "by the hand of the angel in the bush, unto the lesser priesthood, and after receive the holy priesthood under the hands of those who received it under the hand of the Messiah."

The agile prophet jumps from the coach; Whitney tries to follow suit but becomes entangled in a wheel, seriously mangling his leg and foot. Rigdon, who remains inside, is unharmed. The party is delayed 4 weeks while they wait for Whitney's broken leg to mend.
Joseph tells the Twelve that he thought that he had placed the church on a permanent foundation by organizing the stake of Zion. But he is still alive, so there must be something more for him to do, and that is the ordinance of washing of feet, which he then administers.

Oliver gives Joseph a lengthy "patriarchal blessing." Not recorded until October 3, 1835. Included is the following:

On short notice a solemn assembly is called "for the purpose of washing, anointing, washing of feet, receiving instruction and the further organization of the ministry."
On the 26th <of April> I called a general council of the church, and was acknowledged as the President of the High priesthood, according to a previous ordination at a Conference of High-priests, elders, and members, held at Amherst, Ohio, on the 25th of January 32. The right hand of fellowship was given to me by the Bishop. Edward Partridge, in behalf of the Church. The scene was solemn, impressive, and delightful. During the intermission, a difficulty or hardness which had existed between Bishop Partridge and Elder Rigdon was amicably settled, and when we came together in the afternoon all hearts seemed to rejoice, and I received [D&C 82].
On the morning of the preceding day he had an appointment to preach in the Methodist chapel at Kirtland. He arose to address the congregation apparently much affected and deeply impressed. He seemed exceedingly humble, confessed the sins of his former life, his great pride, ambition, vainglory, &c. &c. After he was baptized, he professed to be exceedingly joyful, and said he would not be where he was three days ago for the universe.
Orson Pratt arrives in Kirtland from mission east, having been absent six months, "during which I travelled about 2000 miles, attended 125 meetings, and baptized upwards of 50 persons."

Parley P. Pratt, Thomas B. Marsh, and Orson Pratt, are ordained. Oliver delivers the charge to the Twelve.
Preliminary hearing begins in Richmond with Thomas C. Burch, prosecuting attorney, Alexander W. Doniphan and Amos Rees, defense attorneys. "Witnesses were called and sworn at the point of the bayonet." Sampson Avard (not included in list of the accused) testifies the First Presidency directed Danite activities. Other prosecution witnesses include John Corrill, Reed Peck, W. W. Phelps, George M. Hinkle, Burr Riggs, and John Whitmer.

Stephen Burnett: my heart is sickened within me when I reflect upon the manner in which we with many of this Church have been led & the losses which we have sustained all by means of two men in whom we place implicit confidence, that Joseph Smith & Sidney Rigdon are notorious liars I do not hesitate to affirm, & can prove by a cloud of witnesses & this is not all, Joseph has prophecied in a public congregation lies in the name of the Lord & by undue religious influence he has filched the monies of the Church from their pockets and brought them nigh unto destruction, leaving helpless innocence destitute of a comfortable support while he has squandered the hard earnings of those to whom it justly belonged. three weeks since in the Stone Chapel [House of the Lord] gave a full history of the church since I became acquainted with it, the false preaching & prophecying etc of Joseph and renounced the Book of Mormon with the whole scene of lying and deception practiced by J. S & S. R in this church, believing as I verily do, that it is all a wicked deception palmed upon us unawares I was followed by W. Parrish Luke Johnson & John Boynton (h) all of who Concurred with me
(Sunday) Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Martin Harris, W. W. Phelps, Edward Partridge, Sidney and Elizabeth Gilbert, and Joseph Coe leave Kirtland for Jackson County (900 miles).
The First Presidency, Twelve, some seventies, and some elders meet. The Twelve are seated by age, to regulate affairs abroad but not in Zion or any of her stakes. Ordinations require vote of the church membership. The Twelve call seven presidents of the Seventy (Joseph Young, Sylvester Smith, Lyman Sherman, Leonard Rich, Hazen Aldrich, Zebedee Coltrin, and Levi Hancock) on missions. Seven presidents call and ordain new seventies.
The Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Banking Company begins issuing stock certificates as bank notes.
The next day, November 2d, all the Independence Mormons, numbering about thirty families, left town and gathered together for protection. The same day people made another attack on the Big Blue settlement, when they unroofed another house. They also attacked another settlement about six miles from Independence.
The positive manner in which he [Joseph Smith] expressed himself on this, <his> favorite theme, was directly calculated to produce conviction in the minds of those who heard him, that his whole soul was engaged in it, notwithstanding on a superficial view of the same subject they might differ from him in judgment. It was determined in council, after mature deliberation that he and O. Cowdery should act in concert in raising funds for the accomplishment of the aforesaid object. As soon as the above plan was settled, he and O. Cowdery set out together, and their success was such in one half day, as to give them pleasing anticipations, and assure them that they were doing the will of God and that his work prospered in their hands
The Prophet Joseph Smith was residing with his family in the farm home of John Johnson in Hiram, Ohio, when a mob broke in to drag him from the side of his ailing son, Joseph. After being beaten, the Prophet regained strength and returned home to spend the night picking and scrubbing tar and feathers from his skin. On this day, he preached from the front steps of the farm home to a congregation assembled outside the door that included members of the mob that had attacked him the night before. Later that day, Joseph baptized three people.
The rest of the Twelve return from their mission to the East. There are some difficulties between them and with Sidney Rigdon. Resolved amicably.

The word of the Lord cam[e] unto me saying that President Phelps & President J. Whitmer are under condemnation before the Lord, for their errors <for which they made satisfaction the same day>
Therefore, brethren purge them out, & have no confidence in any except as such as will lay down their lives for this sacred cause for none others are worthy of it. there was no other way to cleanse the church. yet the elect [2] will be saved, & Zion will be the joy of al saints & they will possess her forever & ever; …the Son of righteousness will soon appear with healing in his wings, & he will apare his people as a man spareth his own son who serveth him.
Those appointed to recruit men for Zion's Camp on February 24 leave on their assignments.
Those who are the friends and advocates of this wonderful book [Book of Mormon], state that Mr. Oliver Cowdery has his commission directly from the God of heaven, and that he has his credentials, written and signed by the hand of Jesus Christ, with whom he has personally conversed, and as such, said Cowdry claims that he and his associates are the only persons on earth who are qualified to administer in his name. By this authority, they proclaim to the world, that all who do not believe their testimony, and be baptized by them must be forever miserable.
W. W. Phelps, John Corrill, A. S. Gilbert, and Edward Partridge write Governor Dunklin about his order for Colonel S. D. Lucas to return Mormon arms taken last November. They forwarded it to Lucas on the 17th. He replied that he would write by the next mail but moved to Lexington without writing. The "excitement, or rather spite of the mob, runs so high against our people," that we ask for Col. Allen or Captain Atchison to return the weapons.
W.W. Phelps brings the first printing press to Independence, Missouri (first press in western Missouri).
We have received a pamphlet of 12 pages, containing a review of the "Book of Mormon" from the able pen of Alexander Campbell, of Va. It unequivocally and triumphantly sets the question of the divine authenticity of the "Book" forever at rest, to every rational mind. We shall endeavor to lay it before our readers in two or three subsequent numbers.
While working on the inspired revision of the Bible, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon received a vision in Hiram, Ohio, of the three degrees of glory. (See D&C 76.)
Wilford Woodruff arrives in Quincy, Illinois.
Wilford Woodruff, called to the Twelve by a revelation of July 8, 1838 (D&C 118), is "sustained to be one of the Twelve;" also George A. Smith, who had been appointed by the Prophet to replace Thomas B. Marsh.
Wilford Woodruff: 24th I Met at Candle light in the house of the Lord with the quorum of the Seventies. We had an interesting interview. Their was several ordained under the handsof President Sylvester Smith to the third Seventy. Then we herd two lengthy discourses on efro Elder J. E. Page and the other from Elder P. P. Prtt which was interesting in the first degree. The meeting Closed but little before midnight.
William McLellin writes to relatives of his conversion to Mormonism. McLellin describes how two separate teams of Mormon elders visited him in his home at Paris, Illinois, in July 1831. The preaching of David Whitmer, . . . a member of the second team to visit Paris, so deeply impressed the gospel message on McLellin that he immediately left his settled life to follow Mormonism: "My curiosity was roused up and my anxiety also to know the truth. And though I had between 30 & 40 students and the people generally satisfied with me as Teacher—yet I closed my school on the 29th July and on the 30th I mounted Tom and left for Independence." McLellin becomes one of the first Twelve Apostles but later apostatizes and becomes an opponent of Mormonism.

About two hundred men, women and children, of the deluded followers of Jo Smith's Bible speculation have arrived on our coast during the last week, from the State of New York, & are about seating themselves down upon the "promised land" in this county.
Adam-ondi-Ahman court of inquiry concludes. All acquitted, but all families are ordered out with permission to go to Caldwell county until spring.
After much discussion, high priests in Zion accept the seven high priests sent from Kirtland to preside over the branches in Zion. The seven are Oliver Cowdery, W. W. Phelps, John Whitmer, Algernon Sidney Gilbert, Edward Partridge and his two counselors (Isaac Morley and John Corrill).
An "Extra" edition of the Church's EVENING AND MORNING STAR states: "Having learned with extreme regret, that an article entitled, 'Free People of Color,' in the last number of the Star, has been misunderstood, we feel in duty bound to state, in this Extra, that our intention was not only to stop free people of color from emigrating to this state, but to prevent them from being admitted as members of the Church. . . . To be short, we are opposed to having free people of color admitted into the state; and we say, that none will be admitted into the Church; . . ." This "Extra," is printed in the form of a handbill and circulated as promptly as possible.
and as President Rigdon said in his last discourse here, they will gather and Earth and hell combined cannot hinder them for gather they will. Hence the necessaty of planting new stakes which they received a command to do before they left
and it is expected that after they have set in order the Church in the West they will fix upon 11 new Stakes before they return
and the holy ministry and the keys of the evangelical priesthood, also for an everlasting priesthood forever, even the patriarchal; for behold, he is the first patriarch in the last days. He shall sit in the great assembly and general council of patriarchs, and execute the will and commandment of God under the direction of the Ancient of Days; for he shall have his place and act in his station.
Apostles Thomas B. Marsh (h) and David W. Patten (h) discuss the actions of the Missouri presidents, appoint a committee to visit them, decide to revise city plot.
At Joseph's request, the Painesville Telegraph publishes court testimony. Stoddard says Joseph has apologized for striking him on the forehead with the flat of his hand. The apology has been accepted and Joseph is acquitted .
At night Joseph and his party leave Kirtland in S. B. Stoddard's wagon. Bypassing Painesville, they travel thirty miles to Ashtabula. They arrive on the morning of the 29th and enjoy the beach before boarding a steamship to Buffalo.
